From 1861-1865, Pampa was part of Indian Territory under US control. In 1907, Pampa was named after a ranch in central Mexico that had been purchased by Roy Bean and his family. After World War I ended, General John J Pershing ordered all Mexican nationals living inside the US to leave or face execution. Most of these people left, but some stayed behind and founded what would become Pampa. The first post office opened in 1911 and remained open until it closed in 1948 due to floods caused by Hurricane Floyd which passed through Amarillo that year. In 1951, the town received its charter from the Texas Legislature making it an incorporated town with full local government rights including education, fire protection, etcetera. The first mayor was Nelson Dickson and he served for 14 years before being replaced by Cecil Sawaya in 1973 who continued to serve until his retirement in 2001 The current mayor is Donny Hamlett with term expiring on December 31st 2020

However, the downtown district remains an important shopping and cultural center for the surrounding area. The first settlers to arrive in this area were farmers who came from Illinois in 1851. By 1865, there were several businesses operating within the town limits - including a flour mill and log cabins used by Native American leaders during their campaigns against white encroachment on their territory. In 1871, Pampa became the county seat of Hudspeth County after it was moved from Fort Worth to its current location east of the Trinity River. The courthouse and jail still stand today within walking distance of each other on Mayflower Street (formerly Main Street). In 1875, local ranchers formed a landowning company that developed portions of present-day Pampa into a cotton farming region known as Piney Woods Country Club Estates. This unique property contained rolling hills and wooded valleys with some scattered tracts totaling over 100 acres (40 hectares). As cotton prices declined during World War II due to factors such as lack of acreage available for planting and air-raids damage caused by Japanese bombers over Texas towns like Amarillo and Waco, many residents left Piney Woods Country Club Estates for more accessible areas across Hidspeth County or beyond during the postwar period. Today's downtown core contains several restaurants/bars/cafés/restaurants along Mayflower Street between Elmira Avenue to its north and Polk Street to its south; plus two banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company building being particularly noteworthy) as well as several stores dating back to when Piney Woods Country Club Estates functioned as an economic hub for Hidpeth County’s rural population before those areas were quickly annexed by Dallas-Fort Worth during post-World War II suburban growth elsewhere in Texas Additionally situated nearby are three churches - First Baptist Church #536 (founded 1889), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (#509) and Mount Zion Baptist Church #600 - all exterior walls remain intact from when these buildings served primarily religious functions rather than commercial ones throughout most or all periods since they have been abandoned . While not currently inhabited or typically open to visitors despite havingstood many vicissitudes since they closed decades ago due to various reasons including firebombing threats resulting from changes annexation status without prior warning or replacement funding opportunities starting up again following almost 50 years languishing away off-limits budgetarily until recently due TOA efforts finally culminating with acquisition through donation by Halstead Properties Inc., downtown Pampa will soon be opened to Visitors once again thanks largely theretoful events taking place under auspices OFA recent arrival !!
