Pampa is situated on the Pampa River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) according to the Köppen Climate Classification system.
Pampa, Texas was founded in 1836 by Francisco Valero and his wife Maria del Carmen. Pampa was a small town located west of San Antonio on the Llano River. In 1845, Don Carlos de la Cueva became the first Hispanic settler in what is now Pampa. The Valles family also settled in Pampa beginning in the 1840s. The town developed around two churches and a school. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Pampa. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln offered $10,000 to anyone who could build a road from Austin to San Antonio. George W. Hill responded with a plan to build a road from Fort Sam Houston east to Pampa and then north to Como Junction on the Llano River. The Road Company was formed and began building the road between Austin and San Antonio in 1866-67. On July 4, 1870, when President James Polk issued an executive order creating Travis County, Pampa became part of that county as well as annexation by Austin on August 2nd of that year. In 1907-1908, construction began on the new Methodist church which would become one of the largest such structures ever built in Texas at that time (it still stands today). That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known as "the Ravine" or "the Slopes", which ran down from downtown across Olmos Creek for nearly 400 feet before terminating at Slaughter House Gulch near present day Lubbockite Elementary School - making it one of Dallas' earliest neighborhoods (). This area is now home to several businesses including IHOP restaurants and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas (). A fire caused extensive damage to local businesses during Economic Depression years (1929-1935) but no one was ever charged with arson because insurance companies did not cover fires back then (). All that remained standing after those years were most of the buildings along Slaughterhouse Gulch including both churches mentioned earlier (), some homes (), some businesses (), some tractor sheds (), three schools ()and two ravines used for agricultural purposes only (). Today portions of these properties are occupied by apartments/condos/hotels while other portions remain vacant or have been redeveloped into parks .
