After World War I ended with Austria’s defeat at Anzio beachhead near Rome on 25 September 1918,[1] most Palestinian refugees returned home but some continued to live among non-PALESTINIAN Australians and New Zealanders until 1948 when Israel occupied Palestinian territory following its victory in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.[2] During the next few years some residents relocated back to Palestine but most continue to reside within Tel Aviv metropolitan area since it was chosen as Israel’s capital city after its establishment as a country following independence from British Mandatory Palestine.[3][4] Today only two percent (less than 1 000 people)of Israelis live outside Jerusalem while over ninety percent (about 78%of Israelis) reside within Jerusalem proper .[5][6][7] There have been several attempts by archaeologists throughout history to explore aspects related to early settler life including those dating back to biblical times[8][9] but no definitive evidence has ever been uncovered that would allow any meaningful conclusions about early Palestinian settlements or culture can be drawn without additional research into archaelogical sources more specifically pertaining to that period in time.
