As early as 1861 there were over 160 people living in Palestine contributing to both temporal and spiritual life within local congregations established by John Jepson ( founder of Mt Carmel Presbyterian Church) around that time with others soon joining him including Rev Solomon Hirschwald (founder/director of Zion’s Watchtower Bible AndTract Society), Dr Harry Goldenberg (founder/director of First Congregational Church)and Dr Elias Canning who also served as pastor at Bethlehem Baptist church which later became Second Presbyterian church before moving his labors to Jerusalem where he died aged 93 years early this year after long illness.). These congregations continue today with active worship services held at various locations throughout the county each Sabbath morning despite continuing physical challenges faced by their members due to continued violence perpetrated against them by Israeli settlers dwelling adjacent to their communities while they attend services!
