The town of Palestine was founded in 1837 on the northwest corner of present-day Houston and Downing streets by Samuel Palestine and his brother Amos. They named their town after Lord Baltimore's original colony in North America, which they hoped would be more successful than the failed Mexican attempt. In 1841 Palestine had a population of only fifty people, but it prospered because of its location and access to natural resources such as water and tobacco crops. By 1850 Palestine had become a thriving community with a post office, school, church, storehouses, and other buildings. In 1859, Texas became a state, and Palestine incorporated as a municipality. In 1865, when Texas joined the United States as a republic, Palestine became part of Austin County. The population of Austin County declined rapidly during Reconstruction; in 1872, there were only seventy-eight residents living in Palestine. By 1880, there were just thirteen residents living in Palestine proper and six people living outside its boundaries. In 1902, when Austin County annexed most of Baylor County to form new Austin County, Palestinians remaining within that county petitioned for annexation into Baylor County as well but this request was denied because Baylor had no formal government presence within Palestinian territory. The last Palestinian resident in Palestine died on December 15th Of 1922
