Palestine, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that is located in Eastland County, about 33 miles (51 km) south of Austin and 54 miles (87 km) east of Dallas. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. The name Palestine comes from Anglo-Saxon Palestine meaning "place where men build." In 1836, James Hogg purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land northeast of present-day Palestine in what is now Eastland County and named it after his birthplace, Palmyra, New York. Hogg was an early settler in what would become the Lone Star State and the first Baptist minister in Texas. By 1840 he had built a log cabin on his property which still stands today as the oldest building in Palestine. In 1845, General Sam Houston discovered oil near Palestine and decided to drill for it there; however, due to high costs ($9 per barrel), Houston abandoned his plans and instead settled on Refugio Creek north of present-day Palestine. The discovery led to increased traffic through Palestine which caused some damage to infrastructure including a canal that was built by local farmers to avoid flooding during heavy rains. In 1862 Congress passed the Morrill Act which required all American Indians living west of Mexico City be relocated to reservations within 10 years or face forcible removal by force under government supervision. On October 15, 1865 President Andrew Johnson signed into law the infamous Indian Appropriations Bill which allotted parts of what are now Oklahoma and Kansas along with most of Texas east of the Arkansas River to Native Americans as part of efforts to win their support for Unionism during the American Civil War. In January 1866 Congress reallocated those lands back to US citizens via the Dawes Act; however, many Native Americans did not receive their allotments because they lacked proper documentation or were not Old Worlders like those who had owned land here before them. On February 14th 1870 United States Census enumerated 2,814 people residing in Jerusalem Township—of whom 1,921 were white males over 21 years old and 931 were Native American Males over 16 years old—making up 83% of its total population; 5% were black males over 21 years old but less than 1% were Indian Male Over 16 years old; none were Hispanic or Latino individuals despite attempts by various groups at organization since 1870s #occupation

The area had been part of Mexico since the Alamo War (1836-1839), when General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Texan forces besieged and captured San Jacinto Creek, taking over what is now Austin, Texas. In 1846, as part of the Compromise of 1850, Congress agreed to split Texas into two hemispheres: California on the Pacific coast and New Mexico on the American Great Plains. The eastern half of what is now Palestine became part of Arizona Territory.
