Palestine, Texas is a small town located in Wise County, Texas. The population was 414 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Ephraim and Rebecca Quarles in 1879 as Palestine, TX. The Quarles family had come to America from Lancashire, England in 1846. They started a farm near what is now Palestine and named it after their home country. In 1916, they donated land to the City of Austin for use as an airport expansion area. When World War I began, the city leased the land to Taylor Field Air Service Station to provide aircraft maintenance and training for American pilots. After the war ended, the city donated the property back to the family for reuse on their farmstead. From 1922 until 1949, when it was annexed into Austin proper, Palestine served as a rural community withinAustin’s limits but with its own government and school system apart from Austin public schools). In 1949, when Palestine became an independent municipality within Austin proper boundaries (Which would later become Travis County), its school district became one of three charter districts within that county which continue operate today under various names: Independent School District #1 (ISD 1), Independent School District #2 (ISD 2), or Lone Star Independent School District (LSTI). Palestine has since experienced significant growth and redevelopment over time with many new buildings being erected including two high schools – Bowie High School in 2006 and Willow Creek High School in 2013 – as well as several small businesses and residences developments such as Westview Village II in 2016; all while still remaining an agricultural community with a strong sense of identity rooted in its history and culture
