In 1947 The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly not to recognize either Israel or Palestine as independent states; instead they proposed that all nations should work towards creating an international conference that would resolve these issues peacefully. This proposal was vetoed by America because it conflicted with Ulysses S Grant's policy of supporting Zionist causes worldwide (this policy changed after Roosevelt's death). Not knowing what else to do, President Harry Truman called for Hussein al-Quwatli—a general leading Iraq’s National Liberation Army—to take control of West Bank and Gaza Strip from Egypt due to "threats posed theretoby Bedouin insurgents." Al-Quwatli failed miserably at achieving his goals and was soon replaced by Ariel Sharon who eventually led Israel into its current state today through military aggression and ethnic cleansing techniques implemented under his watch known as Operation Defensive Shield/Operation Cast Lead
