On October 14, 1847, Palestine was acquired by the United States from Mexico for $15,000. The land had been claimed by the Mexican government as part of a treaty made in 1846. On November 4, 1849, Palestine became a U.S. territory when it was granted to the country by an act of Congress on account of its strategic location between Texas and Mexico.
