In 1876, Waddell donated land to the City of Fort Worth for a public park that became known as Palestine Fields Park today. In 1926, Fort Worth Purchased all of Palestine from Waddell for $5 million dollars making it one of the largest municipal acquisitions ever made by Fort Worth Mayor John Sharp and City Manager Harry Laidlaw

The Palestinian people were first brought to Texas by the Spanish in the early 1800s. They came as part of a large caravan led by Antonio López de Santa Anna, who was then San Antonio’s governor. When Texans reopened Resolution 10 controversy over their decision arose over whom should receive the town’s infrastructure and infrastructure money given that most of its residents had already left for Mexico or Guatemala. In response, President James Kenedy established a committee chaired by General Sam Houston to determine who should get what share of goodies from Resolution 10 spoils. The committee eventually chose Palestinians because they were willing and able to rebuild Palmyra after it had been destroyed by Muslims.(1) Palestinians continued living in Palestine County until 1949 when it was reincorporated into El Paso County as part of that county’s official name change from Webb County.(2) At that point, there were around 4,000 Palestinians living in Texas.(3) They have remained here ever since,albeit with some challenges - like strong opposition from some local officials who see them as invaders.) Palestinian immigrants arrived in Texas during two waves: one arriving between 1845 and 1850 and another arriving between 1861 and 1865.(4) Both waves included many women and children; according to Census records kept at that time, more than half (57 percent) of all Palestinian immigrants arrived between 1861 and 1865.(5) During these years Palestinian men worked mainly on farms while their womenfolk took care OF children until they reached adulthood (many married American men). Many women also started businesses within their communities or outside them; such examples include beadmakers(6), seamstresses(7), potters(8), bakers(9), dressmakers(10), etcetera……………..As late as 1951 almost 60%of West Bank businesses still operated outside Israel………Most businesswomen opted for new careers away from home rather than Returning backcountry…………….Women entrepreneurs played an important role within Arab-American social networks during this time……………………..Many successful Syrian refugees settled down with families once they got accustomed to life in America……………..Palestinian settlement patterns differed markedly from those prevailing among other immigrant groups………. Most Palestinians adopted Anglo-Saxon surnames………. As a result many descendants retain some unique cultural values associated with Palestinian heritage…………………………………………………………………………………..
