Palestine, Texas was named after the biblical town of Palmyra in Syria. The name comes from an early settler's report that he sighted a smoke rising from the ruins of Palmyra, which led him to believe that God had sent him to search for this place. In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased land in present-day Palestine, TX and began construction on what would become the first plantation in the area. The land was originally surveyed by Captain James Kenedy and named "Kenedy's Prairie." The first house on the property was built by Uncle John Fisk in 1837. By 1840, about 20 families lived on Palestine Plantation with 5 enslaved workers. On July 4th of that year, General McCulloch ordered all slaves recaptured and their owners brought to New Orleans. After McCulloch's orders were carried out, many people returned home or fled to Arkansas or Missouri due to fear of another slave revolt. From 1840-1847, only 3 free men worked on Palestine Plantation: 1 blacksmith/farmer (John Sibley), 2 white surveyors (George Waddell and William Hogg), and 1 farm manager (Daniel Boone). In 1846, about 100 families lived on Palestine Plantation with 8 enslaved workers; however slave trading continued until 1850 when it stopped because of a US embargo against Cuba caused by our Mexican War ally Mexico. With increased cavalry patrols along the border looking for slave traders & smugglers coming into Texas through Central America & Mexico City, most slaves were unable to escape & eventually died from disease or battle wounds while working on plantations inTexas over the next few years. The last enslaved worker at Palestine Plantation died in 1865 when Union troops burned down their quarters during a raid; therefore ending slavery in Texas forever&nearly eliminating any chance African Americans ever reached Texans through slavery as well as creating one of America’s largest open door policies towards immigration even into this day!
Palestine, Texas was founded in 1879 as Palestine Ranch by Captain James W. Polk and his wife Julia. The ranch was located in present-day Harris County. In 1902, the state of Texas purchased the land from Captain Polk and named it Palestine after him. The Polk homesteads are still standing on the property today.
