There are currently no resident Palestinians in Palestine, but extensive Palestinian/Israeli heritage exists throughout the town and nearby rural areas. The town has a rich history that reflects its location on the banks of the Trinity River and its role as an outpost of early American settlers in what is now Williamson County. The first settler families arrived in 1848, and soon began construction on what would become Palestina: a small farmstead near present day downtown Austin. By 1860, some 300 people had settled there, most of them Scots-Irish Protestants from Ulster who had emigrated during the Great Famine years of Ireland's potato famine (1846–49). Many residents took up farming or ranching; others erected homes or started businesses such as a store and post office. In 1865, when General John C graves offensive against Mexican forces along the Rio Grande (the same year that Mexico ceded San Antonio de Bexar to Texas), many Texan Texans volunteered their services under General Grant’s army; among these men were some local farmers who volunteered to march with General Grant’s unit downriver towards Veracruz City before joining Confederate forces at Monterrey several days later. At Palestrina they encountered Mexican troops retreating southward across Rio Grande - this event helped set off one of America’s earliest military engagements with Mexico – and led eventually to hostilities between American soldiers and Mexicans over control of river crossings downstream fromTexas’ capital city
