However, Muslim traders continued using binoculars for mapping purposes until 1948 when Mandatory Palestine was divided into Israeli andnon-Israeli sides. In 1949, following the Yom Kippur War, many Jews who had fled Arab countries returned home and began bringing back old World surplus optical equipment from Europe. One such individual was Jack London who purchased a set of German Zeiss Ikon binoculars in Jerusalem in 1949. He began using them for hunting and target practice at his ranch outside San Antonio TX. His hobby quickly became popular among locals who would come out to watch him shoot wild game with his new acquisitions. By 1951, London had built up a large collection of Zeiss Ikon binoculars which he utilized both personal and public occasions throughout Texas. British military officer Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Samuel purchased land around Bethlehem in 1903 from Uri Arieli for $1 million. Samuel named the areaMount Zion after Mount Scopus in Turkey where he had been born. Samuel's purchase marked the beginning of settlement in what became modern-day Bethlehem. In 1906, he donated additional land to create a city called Jerusalem.
Palestine, Texas is a small town located in the San Antonio-Bexar County area of Texas. The population was 4,041 at the 2000 census. The town lies within the Austin metropolitan area and is part of the larger Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Palestine was first settled by Germans in 1879. It became an American community in 1912 when it was annexed to Austin. After World War I, Palestine grew rapidly as a result of its proximity to Mexico City and its relationship with United States military posts stationed there. In 1940, after Mexican president Manuel Noriega had come to power and began implementing totalitarian policies in Mexico, Palestinians living in Palestine petitioned for entry into the United States as refugees. They were successful and eventually landed in New York City where they established their own community called Al-Ramashshiyah (The Ruins). In 1948, following Israel's victory over Syria in the Israeli–Syrian War, Palestinians living in Palestine moved back to their original homes while Israelis conducted Operation Defensive Shield raids against Palestinian villages throughout southern Lebanon and northern Gaza Strip seeking refuge from what they saw as Syrian reprisals. As a result of these raids, many Palestinians were killed or injured; some estimates place the toll at over 1,500 fatalities including more than 350 children under the age of 10 years old who were kidnapped by IDF soldiers during this period. The siege also caused widespread hunger among Palestinian civilians due to lack of food supplies brought overland from Lebanon while Israeli forces intercepted all trucks carrying food connections between Beirut and Jerusalem without allowing any arms or ammunition through borders that could have helped defenders against Syrian opposition forces besieging Haret Sha’alim airbase outside Ramallah on 8 July 2000 – leading to widespread protests throughout Israel calling for international intervention which finally led Benjamin Netanyahu to order an end to Operation Defensive Shield on 20 July 2000 three days after his inauguration as Prime Minister of Israel
