Palestine, Texas is located in the Lone Star State of Texas. It is bordered by the Mexican state of Baja California to the east and west. To the north it borders Colorado and to the south it borders Lubbock County. The population of Palestine was 9,521 as of 2010. The town was founded on April 24, 1872 by James Hinton and his wife Missouri, who named it after their home country Palestine (then Transjordan). Hinton had come to Texas in 1869 with his brother-in-law John Suggs from England as a cattle dropper looking for new land to ranch in. He started out grazing but soon discovered that he could sell his cowboys' cowhands' milk for a higher price than any other place he had found. When he met Hinton's wife, Missouri, she too was interested in starting a farm in this area. They decided to name their new town Palestine after their home country. The first store opened in Palestine on May 6, 1872 with two barrels of oil per day sold by J.Hinton and Wm.(Walsh) Kappes from Wichita Falls, Kansas; Wm.(Walsh) Kappes also operated a saw mill which processed lumber from nearby cedar trees which were being shipped downriver for building purposes. On November 5th, 1872 James Pemberton purchased 2 acres near what is now downtown Palestine for $1 cash and moved into what became known as "Pemberton's House" until early 1902 when he sold all his land except 3 acres adjacent to what is now First Baptist Church – one acre at each end of Main Street – making Palestinians an enclave within Palestinian proper dating back to 1872! As time progressed there were several stores including: The Blacksmith Shop Store opening October 16th 1880 by Amos Andrus & Sons (Andrus Brothers), Agrarian Store opened December 10th 1886 by Mose Andrus & Sons (Moses Andrus), Hardware store open September 9th 1889 by Denton Ewing & Bro., established 1865 dry goods store built January 1st 1865 Jno Gorman opened grocery August 25 1870 across from Post Office
On Oct. 24, 1876, Palestine was organized as a town in Medina County, Texas. On Nov. 6, 1916, Palestine was annexed by the City of Austin and became part of the city's municipal limits.
