In 1867, Congress passed The Treaty of Paris which ended the Mexican-American War. As part of this treaty, San Antonio was given its independence from Mexico and it became known as Austin, Texas. In 1881, Orange County was organized from part of Travis County when that county was divided between Houston and Austin. At that time, Texan Governor James Fenton appointed A.T. Hogg as counties commissioner for Orange County based on his belief that Texans would “swear allegiance to no man but God” while living within its borders. Orange is one of three original towns in Travis County (the others are Longview and Woodville). It grew rapidly during the early years following its incorporation into Austin because many new settlers were attracted to theRailroad boomtowns growing up around Dallas and Houston. By 1910, Orange had over 1,000 residents and a newspapers such as The Daily Statesman (now The Chronicle) started appearing regularly to promote civic activities such as elections or public meetings where citizens could voice their concerns about local government policies or infrastructure projects being undertaken by county commissioners at that time near-constant contact with residents through letters editorials or news articles also took place during this period with an intense focus on growth opportunities for businesses opened up by newly arrived farmers who bought land adjacent to railroad tracks situated east/northeast of current day Downtown Austin along what is now I-35W
Orange County was founded in 1853, and its first post office was established in 1857. The county seat was El Paso until 1914, when it moved to Austin. In 1934, the county became part of the new State of Texas.
