Moses Austin, the founder of Austin, Texas was born on a farm near Orange, TX in 1836. After attending Baylor University and serving in the U.S. Navy, Austin founded the first courthouse in Texas in 1873. He later served as president of the Republic of Texas and as governor of Texas from 1901 to 1905. In 1912 he became the first Texan to be elected President of the United States (the term did not exist at that time). For his services to American democracy and ranching during World War I Austin was awarded the Medal of Honor.
