Orange is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harris County. Orange is located in the Houston–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Orange were Spanish missionaries in 1699 and 1701. Captain James Cook's voyage of Discovery visited the site on his way from Manila to Sydney in 1770. In 1821, General Sam Houston established a military post here as part of his campaigns against Mexican insurgents under Santa Anna. The post was abandoned after only two years when hostilities ended and Mexico ceded its northern borderlands to Texas. The first store opened in Orange on January 8, 1852 by Hosea Richardson and Isaac Lewis with $5 worth of goods. A gristmill was built in 1854 by John Gorman and operated until 1865; it still stands today as an historical landmark known locally as “Old Gorman”. The original town square identified by present-day streets such as Tomball Avenue and Main Street (now called Northwest Highway) served as the center of community life for many years before it was destroyed by a fire in 1907 that also destroyed much commercial property downtown including Richardsons general store which continued to be open until 1922 when it burned down again; this time leaving no physical evidence remaining behind except for someBroken windows that can still be seen today from across Southwest Freeway (I-10). A new town square eventually replaced Old Gorman Square however no street or building bears this name currently despite numerous attempts over the years to re-invent or rename one of original Streetscapes icons most prominently associated with Orange .
