In the early 1800s, Orange County was home to some of the most influential gunmakers in the Southwest. The Gunsmiths’ Company, founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1827, was one of the earliest firearms manufacturers in Texas. The company manufactured rifles and pistols for both state and local militias. In 1851, after Forrest’s death, his son-in-law James Waco organized a new company called the New South Arms Company. This company produced rifles and revolvers for Texas Rangers and other law enforcement officers. By the late 1800s, however, Orange County had become a center for handgun manufacturing in Texas. One of the first handguns made in Orange County was a carbine known as the “Pioneer Carbine”. This rifle was designed by John Jenson and built by John Fenton at Fenton & Sons Armory on Houston Street in downtown Orangeville. The Pioneer Carbine featured an octagonal barrel with a detachable magazine that held six rounds.early 1881

The town lies on the east side of Red River on the banks of the Houston Ship Channel, about 15 miles (24 km) northwest of downtown Houston and 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Dallas. As of 2010, it had a population of 984 people. The town was first settled by Texans who founded Orange County in 1839 as part of the Republic of Texas movement to create an independent country south of Mexico City. In 1881, General James K. Polk issued a proclamation naming Orange County after him and his wife, Anna Julia Whitney – one year before he became president of the United States and gave its name to the entire country. At that time, orange trees were very common in what is now Orange County because they were grown close to where sugar cane was grown; prior to this period, most citrus crops were grown inland near San Antonio or Lubbock.
Orange, Texas was founded in 1845 by James W. Coates and is the oldest town in Dallas County. The town was named for the orange trees that grew near it on a plantation named Orange Grove. The first settlers arrived in 1846 and built their homes around what is now Elm Street and Congress Avenue. They started a post office in 1847 and soon realized there wasn't much market for goods they produced so they decided to sell goods from their home instead. In 1850, the first school opened in Orange and by 1860, there were five schools in the area. In 1870, a railroad was built through Orange and soon enough, businesses began to grow up around it. By 1890, there were twenty-four businesses around the town including two stores, three cotton warehouses, four churches, two gristmills, two banks, one insurance company and one physician's office. In 1898-1900s when Dallas County was created from parts of Nueces County (including Fort Worth) it included all of present-day Dallas/Fort Worth Counties as well as part of Wise County
