Odessa is a city in Odessa County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,332 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Odessa County. The area now known as Odessa was part of the San Antonio Missions District and was founded by European Americans in 1836. The mission district included present-day Odessa and much of San Marcos County. In 1881, the town of Midland was founded on the east side of what is now Interstate 10 near present-day Midland Park. The post office at Midland had been established in 1876 but did not become operational until 1915. In 1870, anupply from New Mexico arrived at Fort Bliss with $1,080 to purchase land for a military post in what is now downtown Odessa. Early settlers were Mexican Americans who worked on the fort and its surrounding plantations before coming together to form a commercial community called Acoma (now Midland). When it became clear that Fort Bliss would be extended eastward into Texas future under Ulysses S. Grant's administration policy of opening up new territory to settlement, some Mexicans decided to move to Texas instead of waiting for an official offer from Grants government and started farming their own land around what is now Midland Park and Acoma proper. They names that are still associated with this early community are Peralta (Peregrine), Mescalero (Mescalero Heights), Frio (Frio Creek), Santa Anna (Santa Anna Heights), La Vega (Laguna Vista). Shortly after Ulysses S Grant made his first public appearance in Odessa on January 12, 1861 during a visit to Bexar County he ordered General James Hoggs cavalry unit stationed there across Colorado River Valley march into Texas according to orders received from Washington D.C.. At 2:00 p.m.(local time) on January 15th General Hoggs' unit reachedMidland where they met local farmers Josiah Gregg and James Price who had organized transportation for them back into California including oxen pulling wagons filled with goods needed for farm life such as cattle feeders etc., when news spread through Midland about General Grant's presence please march directly home without stopping anywhere else! This event led many Texans who supported secessionist causes during the American Civil War initially supporting Union forces but later transitioned over time into Loyalty Party support for Lincoln
