Odessa, Texas is a city located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Odessa was founded on November 15, 1879 by Capt. John Crain and his wife Sarah Stephenson as the first town in what would become Midland County. In 1881, Odessa was named after Russian Empress Catherine II's brother Grand Duke Ivan Dmitrievich Odessa. The city's current name is commemorative of its connection to the American Civil War and ranching culture. The history of Odessa can be traced back to when Captain John Crain and his wife Sarah Stephenson arrived in Midland County on November 15th, 1879 from Moscow with their children Anna (1871-1949), John Jr.(1875-1946), George (1877-1964) and Martha Lillian Stephenson(1882-1972). They were looking for a place to establish themselves as ranchers following the death of their father General James Stephenson two years earlier in a hunting trip outside of Austin. After settling down on some family land east of town they started trading goods with the local Indians for food and horses before starting construction on their own small courthouse which opened in 1880. As business grew they developed an infrastructure including water supplies, schools, churches and hospitals which continue to this day. The American Civil War impacted much of what would later become Midland County such as Odessa where many families lost property or friends due to Confederate cavalry raids particularly during the early stages of the war when men were forced into service without any choice but to fight against their own kinfolk especially women who were considered property rather than people with natural rights like menfolk did at that time For many odessans it was one of few opportunities for revenge against those responsible for taking loved ones away from them during that time period . One such raid took place northeast of town near present day Alpine when Confederate troops burned down a farmstead belonging to Mrs . Jernigan & her husband Mr . Jennings allowing her four daughters aged 16-22 years old to escape safely under sheltering trees until Monday morning when they returned home safe & unharmed
Odessa was founded in 1836 by George Washington Houston and his brother, Sam Houston. The town was named after the ancient city of Odessa on the Black Sea, which then served as a port for Russian traders. The early settlers were mostly Englishmen who acted as interpreters for the Spanish colonists. In 1846, Texas became independent from Mexico and Odessa quickly became an important trade center. After the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Odessa prospered as an American military base and commercial center. However, during the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877), Odessa experienced significant decline because of its difficult access to goods and its lack of education opportunities for its citizens.
