Grant's army during the American Civil War; later it became home to various businesses including oil refineries and chemical plants before becoming an industrial center with heavy manufacturing during the late 20th century until its decline following World War II In 1907, construction began on the new Baylor University School of Medicine in Odessa which soon became one of America's leading medical schools In 1915, General Douglas MacArthur arrived at nearby Corpus Christi to lead American forces against Spanish forces during World War I On December 15th 1920 Hurricane Camille struck central Texas killing more than 140 people and damaging or destroying thousands of homes near Odessa In 1954 Baylor University School Of Medicine moved from downtown Odessa to their current facility on East MLK Boulevard which continues to serve as one of Americas most renowned medical institutions today
