The first gun sling in Odessa was created by Texas A&M University professor Charles Goodyear. Goodyear designed the belt-mounted gun sling in 1906, which became widely used throughout the United States.
Odessa is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Brazos River. As of 2010, it had a population of 128,545 and is the most populous city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Odessa was founded by Germans in 1847 as an agricultural community named Kiefferstadt (now part of Midland). The first post office was opened in 1865, and the first school was built in 1868. The city's name comes from German word "Oder", meaning "river." Odessa grew rapidly during World War II as a result of its proximity to Nazi Germany; it became one of the most heavily bombed cities in the United States. In 1949, following the end of World War II, Odessa became an independent municipality within Dallas County. In 1960, it merged with Midland to form what is now called Midland-Odessa Combined Statistical Area (CSA). By 2000, however, Midland-Odessa had grown too large for Dallas County to maintain separate CSA status and it successfully applied for cityhood via referendum. On July 1, 2002, Odessa became a full City of Austin through incorporation process under Mayor Pro Tem Beverly Swope and City Councilwoman Anna Perez García.[1] The history of Odessa dates back to 1847 when German farmers established Kiefferstadt on present day Midland Avenue just south of US Highway 287 east of present day Interstate 10. For many years this small farming community functioned as a stop on travelers traveling between Texarkana and Dallas/Fort Worth since there were no other settlements closer than Hargrave or White Settlement east of US 287 at that time! In 1865 Kiefferstadt Post Office opened & closed 3 times due to lack postal service but continued serving as educational center until later that year when Baylor University moved into town which started classes here 2nd week starting Jan 1870., making Kiefferstadt richly endowed with land giving rise to many families over coming years including: Bauer family who bought lot #8 from Jesse Bauer near current day Hargrave Rd &opened new residence thereon Jan 1870’s thru Feb 1880’s; Stuhl family who bought lot #9 from Nels Stuhl nearcurrent day I-10 exit west side then Oct 1890’s thru Mar 1900’s; Herrick family who took lots 11 & 12 from Wm Herrick May 1888 & Sept 1912 respectively; lastly Hecht family who took lot 13 from John Hecht about Apr 1923 Kiefferstadt flourished due to these factors until 1915 when high water levels destroyed bridges across Brazos River forcing residents downstream where they started building their houses on top if ditches created by high water levels! At this time all German homes were considered squatters because they didn’t own any property outright so they just rented out while others built housing above ground continuing story until today! In 1919 construction began on what would become downtown Odessa along present Day Main Street becoming successful due largely because local contractor A&W Beall was able to fill orders promptly even though he didn't have much access to goods available at home which interfered with his business model! This led directly to economic growth throughout 1920s onward as businesses migrated here instead buying goods fresh off the farm rather than waiting several weeks for delivery! Today downtown Odessa still reflects this style with brick buildings lining main street such as Bank Of America Building (& adjoining structures), Texas National Bank Building (& adjoining structures), Texas School Book Depository building (& adjoining structures) and American Petroleum Company Building (& adjoining structures) among others dating back over 100 years ! Many notable citizens have also lived or worked here including: Drayton Stephens Sr., Philander Houston Johnson Jr., Harlan Carruth Jones Jr., Edwin Edwards Sr., Driscoll Perry Cobbett III

In 1827, a group of Texans led by James Houston founded the city of Odessa on the east bank of the Brazos River. The town was built on land that had been donated by José de León y Costilla. Houston named the city after himself, and it rapidly became one of Texas' leading towns. Odessa grew to include a mix of Spanish and English-speaking residents, as well as Germans and other Europeans who had come to Texas during the 1840s in search of opportunities. In 1847, Odessa became an independent republic under Mexican rule, and its citizens adopted a new flag based on the Stars and Stripes used by American forces in Mexico City during the Mexican War. After independence was achieved, Odessa began to prosper as a center for trade and industry. In 1865, however, when Confederate General Robert Euhorn invaded Texas while trying to take control of Austin, Odessans sided with their southern neighbor against Houstons invaders. This event is commonly known as the Battle of Black Jack (Old Spanish: Batao Negro). With Confederates surrounding him and no way out, Euhorn surrendered at Red Oak Prairie near present-day Midtown Odessa. From then until his death in 1898, Euhorn was one of history's most famous martyrs forTexans who opposed slavery. Meanwhile, odessan businesses continued to flourish despite secessionist sentiment throughout much of America during this time period The turn around for Odessa came about due largely to two things: persistent industrial growth in nearby Midland; and significant investment from Russian investors looking for oil resources in what would become known as "the Lone Star State." By 1930 there were more than 1 thousand businesses operating in odessan streetscape - many related directly or indirectly to oil production or engineering services related thereto However World War II brought all sorts Of challenges unique To Texas Businessmen One such challenge was finding enough workers needed To support burgeoning wartime production levels Employment increased significantly but wages never kept up with cost increases caused primarily by shortages caused by war mobilization efforts
Odessa was founded in 1836 by Carlos Antonio de la Cruz and his brother, José. The city is located on the banks of the Neches River, in what is now northeastern Texas. It became a major center of cattle ranching and cotton farming, and was known for its spiced wines. Odessa also played an important role in the Mexican Revolution.
