In 1837, Captain Bate's son William opened a mercantile store at Sixth and Market streets which became one of the largest such stores east of Houston. This location served as the nucleus for downtown Odessa until 1898 when Baylor College erected its first building on Main Street north of Third Street; this event initiated what would be called "the Downtown Revival". A fire destroyed most of downtown Odessa on November 3, 1899; however, subsequent efforts by citizens including Superintendent J R Madden (1902), Mayor W H Brownell (1905), A G Smith (1910), E H Stroudt (1920), J F Cooke (1925) and others resurrected the community with modest rebuilding operations lasting until 1958 when new skyscrapers were erected along Third Avenue northward from Main Street/Downtown Plaza to accommodate more commercial activity within walking distance of most citizens while providing residential opportunities above ground only for those earning high incomes or owning valuable assets belowground beyond any risk or exposure to natural disasters like floods or windstorms
