Odessa, Texas is a city in Midwestern United States located on the Brazos River. The population was 97,519 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of records for Brown County and part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Odessa's history dates back to 1836 when it was founded by Texans seeking independence from Mexico. The first post office in Odessa was established in 1839, and within a few years it had become an important trade center for goods arriving from Mexico and Central America. In 1865, Odessa became the capital of Brownsville County after Texas became a U.S. state. From 1909 until its incorporation as a city in 1959, Odessa served as the seat of government for much of Midwestern Texas before becoming a major agricultural center during World War II and later becoming home to many aerospace plants and businesses such as Lockheed Martin Corporation (now Lockheed Martin Space Company).
Odessa was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Frémont as the New Orleans of Texas. controlled by Mexico until it gained independence in 1846, Odessa prospered as a trading post and mercantile center with its own militia and judiciary system. The city's growth continued when the railroad arrived in the 1860s, connection it to the rest of the state and national economy. By 1880, Odessa had become one of Texas' largest cities, with over 100,000 residents. In 1912, during World War I, Odessa became a staging area for Allied forces bombing German targets in France and Germany. The city was sacked by American troops on October 15th that year after a two-week occupation; many civilian deaths resulted from artillery bombardments and US military operations against civilians (see also Battle of Odessa).
