On July 1st 1932 members of the Dallas Cowboys football team took advantage of their invitation from then Mayor John Connally to attend an open house at Preston Elementary School located at 25th Avenue East & I-20 instead of going to Arlington Stadium where they would have played their first game against Boston Redskins that day. This event marked what would be known as Cowboy Day or Cowboys Night in downtownDallas until 1984 when all home games started at 6pm sharp . After World War II many veteran families moved into north central TX including many from Japan who had brought their own land and irrigation systems back with them after fighting in Europe/Asia. Japanese Americans living northeastward along I-35W formed another community called Sunriver Junction just southwest of north central TX becoming very active politically within both local government structures through terms like being first elected officials for both factions before annexation into northcentral TX during LBJ's time as mayor
North Richland Hills was founded in 1911 by businessmen George H. Richards and Harry C. Smith. The town grew quickly, and in 1916 it incorporated as a city. North Richland Hills became the most populous community in southern Dallas County, with over 100,000 residents by 1940. It experienced rapid growth during the Korean War years (1950-1953), when many of the town's businesses became involved in the military supply industry. In 1960, North Richland Hills merged with surrounding municipalities to form Garland County.
