The annexation increased the population size to 54,914 people when it took place. In 2000, North Richland Hills voted to become an independent city and assumed its present name. On December 10th, 2009 it was announced that Mayor Price had been arrested for DUI after he ran a stoplight while driving under the influence of alcohol; his sentence will begin on January 11th 2011 though no formal charges have been filed yet
