As of the 2010 census, the population was 815. A new town called North Richland Hills was founded on April 1, 1961 by Dr. Harry Ladd and Mr. Roy Lee; its name was derived from a hamlet in neighboring Richardson Township that served as their Alma Mater (now Westlake Village). The original townsite was about 2 square miles (5 km2). On December 3, 1990, North Richland Hills became an independent city with a vote by its citizens. On November 4th of that year it annexed Hillcrest Ranch to become one municipality with a population of over 10,000 residents. The first people to live in North Richland Hills came from the area around Fort Worth. They were farmers and their families started living in the area around 1875. By 1910, there were over a thousand people living in North Richland Hills. The first schools in North Richland Hills were built in 1915. In 1925, the town of North Richland Hills was incorporated and it became one of the largest cities in Texas. In 1969, North Richland Hills was selected as the site for the new Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
