North Richland Hills is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. North Richland Hills was named for its location on the high ground between Dallas and Fort Worth. It is located in the northeast corner of Dallas County and has a total area of 362 square miles (1,052 km²). The North Richland Hills community began as two small farms near what is now downtown North Richland Hills. The first store in town, opened in 1907 by W. H. "Red" Richardson, became one of the early anchors of the community's growth. By 1949, when it had a population of 1,500 people and included both businesses and residences, voters approved incorporation as a city using $5,000 from an issue dedicated to that purpose. In 1957-58 Mayor Clyde Sennett developed plans for development within the city limits which would have increased its size by over 50%. However these plans were never realized due to opposition from business owners who felt they would not be able to compete with larger cities like Dallas or Fort Worth without sacrificing their own services and jobs. In 1959-60 City Councilwoman Myrtle Maynard spearheaded efforts to create park areas within the limits of North Richland Hills which would eventually become some of DowntownDallas's most popular tourist destinations including Music Hall Park (later renamed The Woodlands), Arby's Park & Grill and Six Flags Over Texas amusement park (now known as Cedar Point). During this time there was also significant investment into research and development in nearby Grapevine; many technology companies such as Intel Capital Group Inc., AMD Technology LaboratoriesInc., ATI Technologies Inc., Lennar Corporation built new facilities there during this time period. Despite this industry activity much progress had been made towards creating acity government characterized by consensus planning through elected officials working together towards common goals rather than individual special interests seeking benefit at any cost - characteristics that continue to characterize much today's downtown Dallas skyline skyline atmosphere despite years of recent economic prosperity brought about by major metropolises such as Houston and Austin
