During World War II many residents donated their homes for military use or were given land grants in order to provide housing for American servicemen stationed in Japan during that war; these properties are now known as Victory Park and Uptown Park neighborhoods respectively. In 1848, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States acquired what is now North Richland Hills from Mexico. On December 6, 1850, US President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring that North Richland Hills would be part of the United States. The first settler in North Richland Hills was John A. Richards who arrived in 1851. He and his family built a cabin on the lot that later becameNorthridge Mall. Richards raised chickens and pigs on their property until he retired in 1909. In 1865, General Pershing purchased 385 acres of land west of present-day Northridge Mall from Richards for $5,000 cash. Pershing named his new ranch "NorthRichlandHills". Pershing also donated land to build an agricultural college which was founded in 1911 as Texas Tech University School of Agriculture and Mechanization. After World War II, North Richland Hills grew quickly as families moved into the area for jobs in Dallas and other cities. The population reached 100,000 by 1970 when it began to shrink as businesses closed and people moved out to bigger homes or farther away from town. By 2000, nucleations around larger schools had created some growth back to the original size but much of the northside remained largely rural with fewer businesses than before
