The town was founded by farmers in 1881 as a small frontier community named Prospect Hill on land that now includes parts of downtown North Richland Hills. The name "north" was taken from Richardson's north side while "richland" came from what is now Joe Pool Park and US-183/I-35W between Prospect Hill Road (now Elmendorf Drive) and Elmendorf Parkway (now Arlington Boulevard). In 1905, prospectors discovered oil reserves near what would become North Richland Hills. Oil production began soon after and a boom followed which saw development of retail stores, schools, churches and other businesses downtown as well as new housing developments throughout northwestDallas County.
