The area that would become North Richland Hills was first settled by farmers from Illinois in 1874. A post office called Willard was established in 1876, and grew into a small town with a population of about 100 people until it merged with Richardson on February 14, 1907. In 1915, North Richland Hills became an independent municipality under the name of North Richland Hills Township. On February 14, 1957 it became a City when it annexed part of Richardson.[1] The economy of North Richland Hills depends largely on manufacturing and service jobs such as education and health care services; however there are also some modest commercial businesses scattered throughout the city. The largest employers are GEICO Insurance Company,[2] Dow Chemical Company,[3] US Airways[4], Archer Daniels Midland Company,[5] and UTEP University.[6] There are also several thousand residents who work in nearby towns including Richardson and Garland.

Prior to opening its doors to residents, North Richland Hills had struggled economically due to its location outside of larger cities and its lack of infrastructure such as schools or water systems. However over time, the city has made great strides through fundraising campaigns and investments in transportation and economic development that have helped it grow into one of Texas' most vibrant cities today - home to more than 24,000 residents and counting!
