New Braunfels, Texas is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. New Braunfels is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. It is located on the border of Hidalgo and Williamson counties. New Braunfels was founded by Apaches and Texans in 1836 as "Nuevo Cerro de la Villa," meaning "new peak of the village." At first it was called simply "New Brazos" because that's where Brazos River crossed from Hidalgo County into Williamson County. Eventually it became known as New Braunfel after General Antonio López de Velasco who fought against Mexican forces in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, two years before Velasco's death, New Braunfel incorporated as a town and changed its name to "New Braunfels." The original downtown business district still exists today with several restaurants, banks, stores and other businesses lining Main Street between Barton Creek Boulevard (the old national highway) to the east and Interstate 35 to the west. Many of these buildings are still in use today; for example Bank of America has been headquartered here since 1907! In 1870inkle Morenz donated land near present day I-35/Barton Creek Boulevard for a new university which would become Baylor University; this donation helped spur growth around campus over time . A fire destroyed much of downtown New Braunfels on February 17th 1910 but did not cause any serious damage although some storefronts were lost including Piggly Wiggly which had been open since 1906 . On October 15th 1912 a tornado touched down just south of NW Blvd and I-35 just north of US 281 making it one of only 2 tornadoes ever documented in TX history both EF3 & EF5
New Braunfels, Texas was founded in 1835 by George Washington Hardin. The town was named after the German city of Braunschweig, which had been the site of a fur trading post operated by Captain John C. Fremont. The first store in New Braunfels was built on the spot where the current Post Office is located. In 1840, John Wesley Powell and his party traveled through New Braunfels on their way to explore the Colorado River Valley. They stayed at the old Mexican fort on San Jacinto Street and were entertained by local residents who made available all they could furnish them with for their trip.
