The city was platted on November 15th 1876 by John Pemberton and James Hogg with the intent of building a town on what would become the eastern edge of present day Johnson County because then there were no settlements east of San Antonio and west of Lubbock (the county seat). When it first took shape as an unincorporated community it consisted only of two lots near where First National Bank now stands; today's buildings date from that early period including the old jail which still stands today across from Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church. In 1880 John Pemberton donated land for a courthouse and school district so that settlers could have access to education outside rural areas being developed around them such as Fort Worth and Dallas. As development grew elsewhere within Johnson County so too did New Braunfel’s stature with businesses opening up all along First National Bank’s main street including hotels like The Ritz Carlton and La Quinta Springs Resort & Spa dating back to this time period as well as numerous small stores dotting Main Street between Third Street southward until it met Interstate 10 just east side thereof forming what is now known as Pemberton Square downtown today honoring our pioneer forefathers forevermore! By 1907 when Wichita Falls started gaining prominence due to its location midway between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Waco service stations had begun arriving here also making New Braunfel one of southern Texas' most vibrant cities with places like Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Mobil Oil Refinery (now ExxonMobil), Texaco Service Station #2 on State Highway 149/Houston Road adjacent to Baylor University's Waco campus becoming popular tourist destinations for locals and visitors alike! Today you can still find some older buildings but most central business districts have been replaced or greatly renovated throughout recent years including much needed infill along I-10/Hennepin Avenuehistoric district – giving people plenty of reason to call this amazing city home once again!

It played an important role in both World War II and later conflicts such as the Vietnam War. Many famous Americans have had their roots here – including singer Willie Nelson and quarterback Johnny Manziel – and many businesses have been born out of wartime activities such as Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works division or Intel's microprocessor lab. Today, much of this history is still felt through retail stores such as Walmart or Sam's Club while other institutions like Texas A&M continue to play key roles in local life such as education or health care.
