That same year, Hesse also donated 4 acres (1 km2) for public use near his new townsite and named it after himself, New Braunfelsspitality or "Hessian Hospital." To date, this donation remains one of the largest ever given to an American community by a foreign individual. In 1911, Jens Ludwig Hesse married Johanna Maria Kappenheimer; they would have six children together before Johanna died in 1925 from cancer at age 36 years old. From then until her death in 1978 she actively promoted education within her community through her organization Friends School District No 1115). Johanna's husband continued working primarily as an agricultural scientist but contributed significantly to developing aspects such as water systems for housing development and irrigation for crops throughout much of Southwest Texas during his lifetime; notable examples include his work on creating soil additives which helped improve cotton acreage across muchwestern North America during World War II and later research into using solar energy for agriculture production including becoming oneofthefirstfarmerstouseconventionalelectricityinAmerica.(See:JensLudwigHesse).
