The city of Nederland, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas, and it is the county seat of Hudspeth County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,457. The city is known for its large concentration of oak trees and its rich history dating back to 1835. The name Nederland comes from Dutch settlers who arrived in what is now Hudspeth County in 1835. They named their new community after Netherland (now Belgium), where they had been living before arriving in America. Nederland first began to grow as a farming community when German immigrants started coming to America in droves during the mid-19th century. By 1875, Nederland had become an important railroad junction and industrial center because of its location on the Houston & Texas Central Railroad. In 1925, Nederland became a charter member of the United States League of Municipalities and has remained a member ever since. Nederland is a small town located in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo– Wichita Falls metropolitan area. Nederland was founded in 1884 by Dutch immigrants and has been a post office since 1886. In 1909, Nederland became the seat of government for Wise County and has remained that way ever since. The current mayor is Shane Kupfermann (R). Nederland is home to two high schools: Pearsall High School and Clear Creek Independent School District's Clements High School. There are also a few smaller schools within the community including Okeechobee Intermediate School and New Beginnings Christian Academy. The first settler in what would become Nederland was John Burchill who arrived in 1884 along with his family from Holland. He took up land on the west side of Shafter Creek near present day Nederland Elementary School after failing to find anything better available east of Texas City. Over time more settlers arrived, most notably George Averill who changed his name toBurchill in 1907 when he acquired title to 1,000 acres (400 ha) northeast of town on Park Hill Ranch which later became known as Averill Dam National Wildlife Refuge . By 1912 there were over 100 residents living in or around what would become Nederlandertown south of FM 1098/US 287 on 242 acres (100 ha) donated by Drs John Hargrave and Edwin Wills divided between them for use as agricultural land . In 1916 Rev JH Brown moved from Houston to start a church here then organized it into an independent school district with grades one through twelve called Clear Creek Independent School District before becoming its first Superintendent General Mrs Lula Coleman purchased 624 acres (248 ha) nestled among Live Oak trees situated just east of FM 711/US 287 on CR 9001 where she built her gristmill now known as "New Beginnings" today's Pearsall HS campus across SH 40 from original school site just northwest corner Third Street East
In 1836, James Fenton erected the first permanent courthouse in Nederland. He and his wife, Amelia, had emigrated from England. The Fentons were among the pioneers who founded this town on a tract of land granted to them by the Mexican government. The town rapidly grew as businessmen and farmers began to settle here, and it soon became one of the largest towns in Texas. By 1890, Nederland had a population of over 5,000 people. It was an important commercial center during the time period when oil was discovered in nearby Houston. Today, Nederland is a small community with few residents remaining since it has experienced rapid growth and decline over the years.
