Nederland is a small town in Karnes County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Marshall Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nederland is also the home of Baylor University and the headquarters for HanesBrands, Inc. Nederland began as a sawmilltown on the banks of the Arkansas River in what is now Karnes County. The first settlers were Dutchmen who came overland from Holland in 1836 to establish a cattle ranch near present day Waco. In 1847, two German men named Schmidt and Kapp established a grist Mill on Buffalo Creek about three miles south of Nederland. This milling community prospered until 1854 when railroads arrived and cut off access to Buffalo Creek for development further north. In 1864, John Ahern established himself as a justice of peace in Nederland after being elected to that office from Wichita Falls. That same year, he married Anna Lundgren and started trading real estate with her brother-in-law Prentice Frye (the father of future Governor Dick Denton). Over time Ahern became one of Nederlanders most prominent citizens; he chaired several committees and was influential in developing many aspects of local life including education and civic improvements such as street paving and water systems. He served as mayor four times between 1888 and 1896 and died at age 94 years on October 13th, 1927 while still serving as Mayoralty Candidate for District 2 (Humble), TX against incumbent James Fenton Clarke Jr.. Ahern's legacy lives on through his daughters Alma Ahern Gunderson (1911-2006) who was an artist living behind her father's house at 6001 Easley Avenue; Kathleen Ahern Magee (born 1961) who married developer Don Fetterman in 1984; Patti Hendricksen Avery (born 1985), owner/operator since 2002 of Old Town USA Shopping Center which fronts IHOP restaurant located across from Baylor University where she works part time; granddaughter Jenna Hendricksen Avery born 1990 also owns Old Town USA Shopping Center along with her sister Kara Hendricksen Avery born 1995 both are employed by their aunt Patti Hendricksen Avery working full time at Baylor University much like their dad did back when he had more influence than now
