The town was founded in 1846 by Dutch settlers who named it after their homeland of Holland. The first post office opened in Nederland on November 15, 1848. Nederland had a population of only 125 people when it incorporated as a municipality on October 6, 1850. In 1860, the arrival of thousands of Texans fleeing the Civil War caused some residents to leave Nederland for other towns within Williamson County due to its lack of water resources and rampant land speculation; however, most residents returned to take up new positions in nearby towns during Reconstruction period. In 1878–79 local developers erected a large cotton gin and distillery complex on what is now FM 10961 just east of town center - marking one of the earliest examples of commercial development in Nederland. Nederland experienced another significant growth spurt from the late 1800s until World War II when many engineering graduates from Texas A&M University moved here seeking adventure and opportunity; but little happened except for some infrastructure improvements over time such as Better Road into town which linked downtown with outlying farms and villages (the current road was built in 1954). In recent years there has been an effort to revitalize the once sleepy community with an extensive Main Street program that has seen several storefronts renovated or replaced while also adding new businesses including two grocery stores (Grio's Italian Market & Kroger) as well as four bars/restaurants: Joe's BBQ & Grill (originally Texaco), Hi-Lite Pizza Place (formerly IHOP), Chinese restaurant Golden Dragon Chinese Kitchen (), and Dutch Bros BBQ & Grills (). However much progress has yet to be made given that Nederland still falls below averageoverty levels across allMetroplex areas according to US Census figures released last year . Today there are few places left where people can retire outside urban centers like Dallas or Houston; making it difficult for retirees living in rural areas such as Nederland to support themselves without working off their pension benefits
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was organized. The land east of the Rio Grande included present-day Nederland, Texas. The first settler in what is now Nederland was John Whitehead, who arrived in 1837. In 1841, John A. Wise founded the town of Waco and named it for General Sam Houston. After Houston's death in 1850, Texans transferred ownership of Waco to James Fenton and his son James Fenton Jr., both from England. In 1857, during the Mexican–American War, an American force under Brigham Young invaded Mexico and captured Ciudad Juárez (now Chihuahua). As a result of this event, many Mexicans fled to Nederland to escape war crimes charges that would have been brought against them if they had stayed in Mexico.
