Nederland is located in the Midwestern United States and is bordered by Texas to the north, Oklahoma to the east, and New Mexico to the south. Nederland is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town began as a cattle ranch on the edge of what is now Nederland. In 1881, Dutchman Hendrik Verbruggen purchased land near present day Nederland and started to build a log cabin that became his home and business center. He also founded the first school in Williamson County, which he named "Hendrik Verbruggen School." In 1925, Dutchman Willem Jan van der Velde bought Van der Velde Ranch and added to it much of what today constitutes Nederland. He donated 100 acres (40 hectares) of land east of town to create Spring Branch Lake, which still provides access from Van der Velde Road into town today. In 1936, Dutchman Pieter Bakel sold his farm northwest of town for $6 million to American oilman Harold Harkness Sr. Aftermarket prices for oils had increased since Prohibition ended in 1933, so Bakel decided to donate all 570 acres (240 hectares) he owned south of town to the local government for use as an open-air shopping mall called Spring Branch Lake Plaza Mall. The mall opened in 1939 and remained open until 1984 when it was replaced by South Lamar Center shopping complex which also featured a movie theater and concert hall/theater facilities nearby on Congress Avenue adjacent to Interstate 35E/Austin's North Austin Boulevard corridor later known as I-35W/University Drive corridor downtown - this long corridor remains one of the most vibrant areas along I-35W with several high-end restaurants including Amazon's HQ2 located just off University Drive near Uptown Park - making it one of the most expensive areas within Austin city limits! Wealthy Texans who were not willing or able to reside within city limits built their own enclaves such as Uppertown or Midtown Austin where they could enjoy quality living without having to worry about traffic congestion or public transportation options
Nederland, Texas history begins with the founding of the town in 1836. The Dutch-speaking families who settled in what is now Nederland began to farm land near the TrinityRiver. In 1839, John Brouwer and his brother, Hendrik Brouwer founded a store in what is now Round Rock. By 1865, there were 15 businesses in Nederland. In 1880, Nederland had a school and two churches. The population increased rapidly during the 19th century because of its location on the railroad and its access to jobs in nearby Austin. In 1912, there were 4 businesses and only 10 residents living in Nederland when it was annexed by Austin. During World War II, many citizens enlisted and served in the military; however, few buildings remain from that time period. In 1946, Nederland became an independent city after being merged with neighboring Round Rock as part of a larger annexation process for Austin metropolitan area. After independence was granted to Nederland by the Austin City Council on November 7, 1946, some changes occurred that would define how this community reacted over time: development around Pioneer Square began; a fire destroyed most of downtown on February 9th 1947; and more than 50 years later – on October 27th 2017 - Mayor Kmet's proclamation designates "Naderlands Day" as an event marking special significance to this small community throughout its long history
