Nederland, Texas is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The Dutch colonists had come to Texas as traders and missionaries looking for land to settle. They founded a small village nearpresentday Nederland and name it "Oudewater." After several years, the Dutch colonists decided to move their settlement to what is now Cameron County because of its fertile soil and proximity to Mexico City. There they started a cotton plantation that grew into one of the largest cotton plantations in Texas. In 1857, Nederland became an independent municipality when it combined with neighboring Schermerhorn and Overtonville to form the new Town of Schermerhorn. In 1870, Schermerhorn incorporated as a city with a population of 553 people. By 1920 Schermerhorn had grown so large that it merged with nearby Round Rock into one municipality with a population of 10,523 people total (including Schermerhorn). In 1925 Nederland acquired land east of Highway 377 between I-35 and US 287 for development into an agricultural township known as Round Rock Farms which would eventually become home to more than 25 thousand residents across ninety-six square miles including homes on high shoulders overlooking rolling farmland stretching for over twenty miles northward towards Georgetown and Lubbock. Highland Mills would also be developed adjacent to Round Rock Farms through the 1930s becoming one of America's largest conglomerates during this time period providing jobs for many residents on both sides of I-35 outside Loop 610 East (later renamed Interstate 35E) just south of downtown Round Rock until its closure in 2001 due largely to problems associated with asbestos contamination in many properties within several miles thereof today still facing very serious health risks from long past exposure). Nederland is a town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and is located approximately 26 miles (41 km) northeast of downtown Austin. The town sprang up around a sawmill that had been operating since 1855. The first post office was established in Nederland on March 3, 1861, and the first store opened in 1865. Nederland became an incorporated municipality on December 1, 1872. In 1902, Consolidated Gas Light Company bought the mill and built a new millrace to power their lights. As this happened, many small businesses were closed because they could not compete with the larger company's mills. In 1911/12, when Consolidated merged with Texas Western Railroad to become Texas Eastern Railroad, Nederland lost its status as an incorporated municipality and reverted back to an unincorporated place name within TXERA boundaries until it regained its status on April 6, 1912 when it joined TXERA as a part of their newly created Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). "It would be fitting if we pause here for just one moment before continuing our journey down Memory Lane," said Mayor Tom Slaton during his dedication of the old white schoolhouse that still stands today in what once was called "Netherlands". After another flood damaged many homes in 1907-08 some residents decided to move away from town while others tried to rebuild using local materials and labor only to have more flooding happen again two years later which destroyed much more property than ever before so many people relocated again making Netherlanders Park into what it is today with plenty of Ruins left behind from where things used to be
Nederland, Texas was founded in 1836 by Dutch colonists. The town of Nederland was named after the County of Holland. The town grew quickly and by 1840, there were over 100 residents. In 1845, the Republic of Texas was formed and Nederland became part of it. In 1861, the Confederates attacked Nederland and many people were killed or captured. After the Battle of San Jacinto, most of Nederland fell to Confederate forces. On November 30th, 1865, Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and all remaining Texans were admitted into the Union as state citizens.
