The first settlers in Nederland were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1836. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1839, they began to grow crops and raised pigs and chickens. By 1840, they had a store and started to build homes. They named their town after their home country of the Netherlands, which at that time was part of the United States of America. In 1845, the rest of Montgomery County was created and Nederland became its county seat. The first governor of Montgomery County was John Hogg (1808-1847). He served three terms (1845-48, 1850-54). In 1863, Nederland incorporated as a city with a population of 100 residents. A year later it annexed land from Irvington to form a new city with an estimated population of 350 people. In 1907, Nederland withdrew from the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area and became an independent municipality with a population of 710 people only

It also developed a strong trade infrastructure which continues to be beneficial today. During World War II Nederland came into contact with American forces firsthand as they conducted operations against Nazi Germany across Texan soil. As a result of this experience, Nederland emerged as one of America's most supportive communities during wartime - even hosting Victory gardens during 1942-1945 (a program initiated by President Franklin D Roosevelt). Today, Nederland remains an important community with Ryan Air Force Base located just outside its boundaries - home to more than 40000 military members from all over America who call these foothills their homebase! The town has experienced rapid growth over the past few decades; recent annexations have seen new subdivisions pop up on old farmland like never before!
