Nederland, Texas is a city located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Nederland is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Nederland" comes from Dutch settlers who arrived in what is now Midland County in 1845 and named it after their home country, the Netherlands. The town was platted in 1865 by J. P. O'Connell and Wm. Denton as a result of land grants given to them by President Abraham Lincoln for service in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1902, Nederland became a part of Dallas when it was annexed into that city's municipal limits. In 1955, Nederland voters passed an ordinance annexing neighboring towns of Commerce and Richfield to form Richfield Village; however, Richfield Village failed to gain full incorporation until 1959 following a final vote by the Dallas City Council over objections from Mayor Lenny Bruce and other village officials about its lack of economic viability as an independent entity. In 2002, elected officials approved plans for a new downtown development called "The Edge", which would have encompassed all or most of Commerce Street north of Interstate 30 between Elm and French streets eastward; however this plan also failed to gain approval from city planners due to concerns about traffic congestion potential caused by the proposed development project and its proximity to other larger businesses and neighborhoods withinDallas-Fort Worth metroplex . On November 1st 2014 Nederlands voted against Proposition 3 (the anti-gay marriage amendment) voting 51% against with 49% cast ballots not including those who voted no on proposition 3 because they are gay or lesbian . Nederland—later spelled Nacogdoches—was one of Texan counties located in what is now Wichita County. Nederland’s location on both banks of the Trinity River made it an attractive site for military posts during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The town’s first post office was established on July 4, 1847, and it continued to serve until 1861. The Civil War began in April 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter on South Carolina’s coast. On April 14th, Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant declared martial law throughout much of Texas and ordered all residents to leave their homes or face execution. One hundred fifty men from Nederland took refuge aboard USS Perry while their town was looted by Confederate forces before they sailed for Galveston Bay on May 5th with only five rifles left behind them. Aftermath: After Fort Sumter fell, most Texans chose not to fight against their southern neighbor but instead seek exile or freedom abroad; however, some local men formed militias called "Union Rangers" to resist any federal efforts to retake their homes or towns after Lincoln's inauguration victory over Stephen Douglas in November 1860 demonstrated his ability as president to suppress secessionist sentiment throughout his two terms in office (1861-65). A few weeks after Grant's proclamation ordering all Texans out fortress surrendered by May 1862; however some minor skirmishes still occurred between Union forces occupying various points along East Texas coasts until 1865; due largely to Plan Colorado which aimed at disrupting railroads used by Confederate armies moving northward through Mexico City en route towards Key West petered out without achieving anything more than symbolic value
Nederland, Texas history began with the founding of Fort Worth in 1836 by General Antonio L. Armijo. The town was named after Nederland, a small Dutch colony in what is now the United States. After two years of development, Fort Worth became an important military and commercial center on the southern border of Texas. In 1839, during the Mexican-American War, Fort Worth was besieged and captured by Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The fort surrendered to Mexico rather than be burned down as planned by Texans led by Sam Houston. As part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded Texas to America without giving up its sovereignty over it. This event marked the end of Spanish influence in Texas and the beginning of American control over that state.
