The village grew rapidly due to its location close to both Hudspeth County and Wichita Falls. In 1867, the United States Congress passed legislation granting land east of Wichita Falls to Baylor University for education purposes. This gift helped spur development in Nederland and other areas surrounding it. In 1925, Hudspeth County was created from parts of Wichita Falls and Hays counties. As part of this expansion, Nederland became part of Hudspeth County. The county seat moved from Wichita Falls to Nederland in 1928 and remains there today. During the years since its inception, Nederland has experienced several economic changes which have impacted its residents directly or indirectly. These include: - A decline in agriculture due to competition from larger agricultural towns such as Amarillo - An increase in manufacturing during World War II which led to an increase in jobs throughout the area - A period during which Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents conducted raids targeting Mexican traffickers operating out of Hays County - A growth in petroleum production after oil was discovered near Miles City
