Its citizens support their community through everything from volunteerism to weatherization programs; even their schools continue to thrive despite often difficult conditions outside the classroom! In addition, they're proud of their history and culture which has seen them adopt some interesting customs such as wearing traditional dress at weddings (a practice now considered archaic). In 1849, the Dutch Reformed Church in Nederland, Texas organized as a mission station. The church was established on an Indian burial ground east of Wichita Falls. The first pastor was Rev. Cornelis Aerts, who arrived in December of that year. In 1855, the church built a school and began to preach the gospel to Native Americans living around Wichita Falls and San Antonio. The town of Nederland was platted in 1875 by Wiley Fenton and others from Wichita Falls. The name "Nederland" is derived from Dutch for "New Netherlands." The post office at Nederland was founded on February 3, 1886. In 1907, Nederland had a population of about 350 people and a school with 10 students; it also had a store, two hotels, and two churches. On July 1, 1916 (the day after Texas became an independent state), the town lost its charter due to financial problems; however, it regained it in 1921 when Wichita Falls annexed it into their city limits. On November 16th 1907 there were three murders committed near Wichita Falls by members of the Ku Klux Klan which caused local reactions throughout the state including fear that white supremacy would be revived in Texas following ratification of the US Constitution; this led to strong anti-Klan sentiment being voiced against groups like the KKK across much of south Texas during this time period according to historian Don Beattie's research into this topic: "It [the reaction] set offa race rioting which lasted several days." On November 17th 1907 five black men were lynched outside Wichita Falls by white men who thought they were Klansmen because they wore masks or uniforms associated with African American heritage; many residents believed that these killings were connected with racist attitudes towards blacks throughout much of south Texas at this time period according to Beattie: "This event sparked one of South Texans' most notorious civil rights struggles - efforts by African Americans to gain equality through peaceful protests and boycott." Aftermath: At least twenty-six people were killed (mostly young boys)and scores more injured as mobs responded with violence against whites over what some felt was unjustified retribution for what they considered an innocent act done within their own community using ' clenched fists'. Many historians now believe that these events may have been provoked deliberately by KKK leader David Lane based on his suspicion that these victims could have exposed him deeper inside Wichita Falls as part as an intelligence agent working for American interests abroad... regardless of whether or not any KKK members actually participated."
The first European to see what is now Nederland, Texas was the Spanish captain Hernán Cortés in 1519. He named the area Santa Anna because he found a tree with golden fruit while exploring the region. The land that is now Nederland was granted to Captain Antonio de la Garza in 1697. In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased 640 acres of land from Francisco Moreno and gave it to the people of Nederland as a gift. The town of Nederland began to form in 1837 when settlers arrived from New Mexico and Colorado. The first school was opened in 1840 by Reverend James Pemberton. The town grew rapidly and by 1848 there were over 100 residents living in Nederland. By 1870, there were over 200 businesses operating in Nederland and it had become an important trading center for Central Texas. In 1902, the town became a city and remained so until 1975 when it merged with Austin into one larger municipality
