Nacogdoches experienced its heyday during World War II when munitions production increased as a result of the war effort; however, since then there has been steady decline with no major industry present except for agriculture which accounts for most of the town's income today. The population peaked at 2,521 during the 1990 census but has fallen steadily since then to 1,813 as of 2010; however, it remains one oftxthe most ethnically diverse communities within Texoma County

Nacogdoches, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 266, up from 240 at the 2000 census. Nacogdoches is one of 10 cities in Travis County and is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The city saw growth from its original population of 25 to over 100 in only ten years due to advances in transportation, communications and other areas such as agriculture and tourism. The first settlement in what is now Nacogdoches was made by pioneers led by Captain John Fitch on October 3, 1835 after they crossed the Red River into present day Texas from Louisiana. In 1840, settlers arrived seeking land grants that would include access to water resources for their crops and cattle herds. By 1850, sixteen families had settled near what is now downtown Nacogdoches while others were established around Slaughter Creek and Posey Road near FM 528 (now US 281). The early days were difficult with few natural resources but progress was made with help from friends, family and government officials who helped provide water rights for mills and farms alongwith other resources like timber and coal found nearby. In 1865 the Texas & Pacific Railroad reached Nacogdoches through a route parallel to Slaughter Creek which then connected San Antonio with Lubbock providing a vital link between East Texan industrialists and those further east across the Rio Grande Valley accessible only by steamboats or wagon trains. With this new rail line came increased trade opportunities for farmers along with an influx of people who started arriving during Reconstruction Era following the Civil War which saw many men leave Southwestern states looking for opportunity elsewhere including Texans such as Captain Fitch who returned home after being discharged from his Union army service at Fort Sam Houston on February 15th 1865 By 1870 there were over 150 residents living in downtown Nacogdoches while agricultural activity continued to grow with cotton production accounting for most exports until World War II when petroleum became available leading to declines in textile production followed by aircraft manufacturing beginning during World War II before giving way again during economic recession following war's end culminating in current day decreases in industry within city limits as well as overall economic decline since 1990s . The downtown core has seen some redevelopment but it remains largely historic commercial/residential districts surrounded by Working Class neighborhoods that continue to remain poorest among large American cities . Although residential prices have generally declined over time much like any other community during hard times local businesses have been able to stay open despite shrinking market share due partially to lack of competition particularly outside major tourist destinations . Today there are several restaurants still open serving traditional Mexican food although joblessness rates have surpassed 30% making it difficult for many families to keep their homes even though property values continue To rise
