As cotton production increased throughout much of America during this period, so too did demand for slaves from Africa; however, slave traders found little interest in purchasing Africans living within Confederate lines since these men could be bought or stolen without consequence outside those areas controlled by Union forces. In 1859–60 when violence between white supremacists across America spilled over into Reconstruction South Alabama following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves there except for about 25 percent living on plantations near Mobile Bayou (now Bayou Teche), some African Americans decided it would be more profitable to move away from Reconstruction areas such as Mobile and Selma where they shared commonalities with white Republicans rather than risk becoming targets of retribution or worse should they reveal themselves as slaves again. One group including several sons of former slaveowners chose this path while others like John Brownlee - leader of pro-secessionist raiders at Harpers Ferry - stayed put because they believed that free blacks should not live under whites’ rule but rather follow their own natural leaders set forth by God Himself instead.Brownlee Jr., John A.; "John A.'
