Nacogdoches is a town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first European to set foot on what is now Nacogdoches soil was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1606. A grant from the Mexican government to José de Arista was made in 1823 and Nacogdoches became a municipio (town) on July 4, 1830. In 1853, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent Ulysses S. Grant as commander of Union troops into Starr County to quash a rebellion against Mexican rule by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and his followers known as "the Texans." The Mexicans had been dominant for more than two centuries and were considered oppressors of their Native American and Hispanic citizens alike. Grant's forces destroyed most of the local cattle drives while skirmishing with Confederate forces under General Sam Houston near present day Arlington Heights outside Austin; however, Houston escaped unharmed before Sherman could reach him. On November 5, 1853 (Starr's 350th anniversary), Nacogdoches organized itself into a town charter and became an independent republic under the name Republic of Texas on December 6th Governor John Wirths appointed David Crouch as its first mayor who served until 1865 when he resigned due to health concerns about frontier life back east during slavery days DPS troopers patrolled much of Nacogdoches during Reconstruction era ; post office opened January 1st 1870 In 1896 City Council proclaimed itself "the city" after merging with neighboring town Victoria which also declared itself "the city" that year . By 1920 both towns had reverted back to their original charters . In 1925 City Council passed an ordinance annexing neighboring Victoria - again effective January 1st 1926

Nacogdoches is one of the oldest communities in Texas and may have been founded by people from what is now southeastern Oklahoma. The first post office in Nacogdoches was established on February 14, 1871. It was moved to its current location on May 3, 1898. The town sprang up around a sawmill that had been built there by Captain John Aird and his brother-in-law, Hugh Shields. By 1901, the mill had ceased operating and most of the town's growth came from new businesses started by men like Wm. Ewing (a farmer), Laddie Burr (a storekeeper), Jno. Bigham (a contractor), and Creswell Hodge (an attorney). In 1914-15 when some residents took to arms against local white supremacists during the Red River War, violence ensued which led to at least two murders and several thefts from homes in Nacogdoches; it has been said that some perpetrators were motivations for their actions rather than racism itself (). After World War I ended with Germany's defeat, many German immigrants arrived in Texas looking for work; they brought their own culture with them and changed aspects of daily life here such as religion (). In 1930,[2] after years of planning by Mayor Benjy Weiser (), construction began on what would become Nacogdoches Municipal Airport (). It served as a stopover for various airlines before becoming operational full time on October 1st 1931. At its peak during WWII it handled 4,000 passengers per day (); however due to bombs falling over Japan days after Pearl Harbor (), demand for air travel plummeted () and operations were discontinued on September 30th 1945 citing budget shortfalls (). On December 5th 1954[3] an ordinance was passed encouraging citizens to keep their municipal airport open until further notice because "the present situation makes it necessary" (); however due to budget cuts it reopened only twice between 1957-1960 before closure once again due to budgetary restrictions (). Today much of what used to be downtown Nacogdoches has been replaced by high school/junior college campuses (), while older buildings still stand scattered throughout residential areas surrounding the larger central business district (). According to the 2010 U.S Census[4], there are approximately 2,500 residents living within one mile (3 km) of either end of town while another 500 or so live within onehalf mile (1 km) away along Interstate 35W . Although there are no services available outside town limits (), day-to-day activities include shopping at local stores or going door-to-door selling government bonds or other products (); social events are typically held at nearby high school football games or county fairs ().

Hogg as part of a cattle drive from Wichita, Kansas to Lubbock, Texas. In 1912, Nacogdoches became the first municipality in Texas to be established by an act of the state legislature. The city council and mayor were formed in 1916. Nacogdoches is located on the Red River near its confluence with the Brazos River. It is about south-southwest of Austin and about northeast of Houston. In 1872, James W. Hogg drove his cattle from Wichita, Kansas to Lubbock, Texas on what would become known as the "Hogg Ranch". On September 20 that year, Nacogdoches was founded when citizens voted to incorporation under Section 3 (a measure which allowed for municipal organization) of Article I of the Texas Constitution that same year; it was also incorporated as a township on November 12th following passage by an election held at City Hall.[1] The first Mayoralty elected in 1916 was Harry Capps who served until he resigned due to ill health[2]. From 1920 until his death in 1935,[3], Averill Harriman served as Mayor pro tempore upon victory over incumbent John Jernigan Sr.. Since then both offices have been filled by special elections only once – Harold Hamm[4]). In 2002 Mayor Rick Perry appointed David Beasley interim mayor pending results of a mayoral runoff election between him and former City Manager Vernon Wells which did not take place because Beasley withdrew before voting began[5]. In 2006 Mayor Annise Parker appointed Will Smith Acting Mayor after her predecessor resigned due to illness[6]. Smith left office effective January 1st 2007 after being unable to win re-election against current Alderman Donte Moncrief Jr., who had won through petitioning process
