After Mexican president Don Agustín de Velasco surrendered to Houston on April 12 that year, he ordered all remaining Mexican troops out of Texas except for 1,500 men who remained to garrison San Antonio de Bexar until hostilities ended two weeks later. On October 3, 1867 Governor Jock Fuller established a government here with Robert Epps as its first president. Nacogdoches, Texas is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Comanche County. The first settler in Nacogdoches was George Eastman in 1837. The townsite was laid out by James Burch and others on March 15, 1838 and named for General Andrew Jackson's Creek Station on the Arkansas River east of present-day Wichita Falls. In 1840, Daniel Boone visited this region as part of his exploration into what would become Dallas County. He stayed at the creek station for two weeks before returning to Kentucky via what is now Interstate 35W. A post office called Nacogdoches was established in 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1851–1852 an act of Congress authorized the erection of a military fortification along Brazos River near present-day Fort Worth; this became known as Fort Worth Bend Army Post Park (later Fort Worth State Park). The post office at Nacogdoches served as its headquarters from 1850 to 1861; it reopened on February 17th under new management three days later after troops arrived from Austin to protect settlers who had not yet moved westward following passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854). On July 2nd 1860, Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Eagle Ford Ranch north of town; 11 men were killed and 22 wounded before Union reinforcements arrived and drove them off. Nacogdoches grew rapidly during the early years of American settlement hereabouts; by 1800 its population had reached 100 people. By 1830 it had doubled to 200 people living principally within a radius around downtown which included most Ofallon Creek waterholes – today’s South Main Street and West Seventh Street – then alluvial land that drained through numerous creeks emptied into Brazos River Valley northwestward towards Fort Worth Bend Army Post Park/Fort Worth State Park upstream from today’s city limits (the area now occupied by UT Arlington). This early growth may have been due largely to incentives offered by local entrepreneurs such as Elisha Peake who builtupexhibitionist typesaderie theaters hereabouts while also developing some well-known cotton plantations adjacent Toombs Landing Lock & Dam northeast near present day Arlington Heights / Oak Cliff while also engaged in cattle drives across these same reaches when needed ferrying Participants downstream past Dutchtown Lighthouse just below today’s University City Limits – see “Peake House Museum: History & Heritage”) In November 1858 John Wesley Powell became interested in exploring northwest Texas beyond Ft Worth Bend Army Post Park boundaries when he discovered possible oil reserves located about 8 miles southwesterly along Buffalo Bayou between modern day San Antonio and Jarbula Springs employing hydraulic fracturing techniques then being used only within Oklahoma City limits where he began drilling using directional mud Report dated January 1865 found nothing conclusive but further investigation led him personally to mineral rights owning interests hereinabove patented October 20th 1865 thereby becoming one step closer fulfilling his lifelong dream!
