But there were also some rifles available, such as the .44-caliber rifle that was used by cattle ranchers. The Nacogdoches Museum of History and Art has an exhibit on “Gun Targets in Texas” which is open to the public from May 1-September 30. The exhibit features historical firearms targets from the Lone Star State.
Nacogdoches, Texas is a small town in Galveston County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Nacogdoches is located on the Gulf of Mexico at (29.8667,-95.3333). Nacogdoches was founded in 1872 as a small trading post by Scottish immigrants and their families who had come toGalveston to prospect for oil reserves. By 1907, the post had grown into an important center of commerce and culture in Galveston County. The name Nacogdoches comes from the Kiowa word "na-coga" meaning "place where woodchucks live." In 1915, General Pershing ordered all American troops out of Mexico City because of the Spanish flu pandemic that had hit America hard. Assembling his forces near San Antonio, Pershing ordered Captain John Wiebe to establish a military hospital at Nacogdoches with supplies and personnel needed to care for soldiers returning from Mexico City. Wiebe built what became known as Marine Hospital No. 4 on land now occupied by FM 19606 south of town limits - just beyond present-day Crosby Drive - and began providing care for American Expeditionary Force members returning home from World War I and World War II until he retired in 1951. In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NAS Covington) at Nacogdoches; NAS Covington played an important role in naval air operations during World War II and later became a civilian airport serving Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth Airport In 1959, when Galveston County annexed most ofHouston's east side including parts of Springtown and Sugar Land proper, it decided not to annex Nacogdoches because its population was only 1,500 people compared toHouston's 10 million people In 2000 UPN Satellite Television purchased local stations KHTX (NBC), KTXD (CW), KLFY (FOX)and KRGV (ABC)fromCrosby Communications Corporation which operated them under two different brands: KHOU(PBS)and KVUE(CNN). In 2001 KHOU moved its studios from downtown Houston to Saginaw Valley University's satellite campus north of town; KVUE moved its studios from Addison Road southeast of town into new construction on 300 North Shore Drive adjacent to Gulfstream Park which opened in 2002 KHOU rebranded as Fox 26 after changing its affiliation from PBS

In 1907, Nacogdoches merged with Lubbock, Texas to form the Lone Star State of Texas. Today, Nacogdoches remains a small community with a rich history which can be enjoyed by all who visit its shops and businesses.
