The city was founded by John Nacogdoches and his wife Martha on November 11, 1849. It was named for General Sam Houston's home town of Nacoochee in Georgia. The Houston and Rock Island Railroad reached Nacoochee from downtown Austin on December 12, 1854. A post office called Nacoochee was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. Nacoochee Baptist Church first met on October 14, 1861 when Rev. Ladd Wills organized a church group from citizens of Chattanooga and neighboring townships to worship God according to their own convictions without attendance at services held at other churches. On January 30th 1865 an act of the State Legislature created a seat for Nacoochee within Travis County and named it after Martha Washington Johnson who had made generous donations to that cause two years earlier while living in Chattanooga proper (now part of Nashville). In 1870 George Baylor founded Baylor University which became one of the world's leading universities with its original campus located near present day Rice University before moving its operations to Plano in 1971. In 1923 Johnnie Ray started calling himself "The Lone Star" because he had become self-sufficient when most Texans could not support themselves during World War I by growing crops or manufacturing goods sold outside their state borders On September 3rd 1912 Standard Oil Company built a refinery located just south of town along Highway 290 east of Interstate 20 providing jobs for local people up until it closed down as part of the Great Depression . A few years later nearby Refinery No 9 reopened as Brazos Valley Petroleum Company making gas available for Austin drivers traveling east on I-20 . After that refinery closed down TXDOT constructed an interchange east off I-20 near US-290 making it possible for motorists traveling into/out of Nacogdoches to access both Prairie Road (I-10) northbound and Business Loop 1604 southbound

The name means "headwaters of the Neches," and it is derived from the Spanish word nacer (to cry). The town's population has grown over time, reaching its current size of 30,000 in 2000. The first settlers to Nacogdoches were Englishmen who arrived in 1851. They built a cabin on the banks of the Neches River and named their settlement after Lord Nelson, who had fought at Trafalgar during World War I. By 1865, there were more than 100 people living in Nacogdoches. The cotton industry began to grow in central Texas around 1870, and Nacogdoches became one of the largest cotton towns in America. In 1881, Jeptha Bowen bought land near present-day downtown Nacogdoches and started planting wheat and other crops. He soon realized that cotton could not compete with other crops for acreage or price; he abandoned his attempt to establish a Cottonseed Mill at this location. In 1886, Stephen Fenton established an oil refinery on the outskirts of town; this was later known as Midland Oil Refinery Number One (MOR1). The townspeople soon developed a strong interest in oil production; they erected several roadside billboards advertising crude oil products such as kerosene and paint thinner. In 1907, MOR1 became Midland Oil & Gas Company when Gulf Oil Corporation merged with Midland Oil Company Limited Partnership (later ExxonMobil) . Over time, many businesses have been located within walking distance of each other in downtown Nacogdoches - including restaurants, bars, convenience stores/markets/grocery stores/cafes/snackseries etcetera - making it easy for residents to get what they need without having to leave their homes or go outside for goods
