It is bordered by Bastrop to the east and west and Tyler to the south. The first known settler in what would become Nacogdoches was James Robertson on August 21, 1836. He named it after Nicholas Nacolet, a French Canadian who had come toTexas in 1835 with his family. The first post office was established in 1837 and was called "Nacolet." In 1840, John Witherspoon opened a store here. By 1850, there were nine stores in Nacogdoches. A cotton gin was built here in 1852 by Jno Hoggs and operated until 1860; it has been destroyed or removed numerous times but still stands as a historical landmark nearby. In 1861 James Buchanan Polk became President of the United States and selected Houston as his new headquarters; he stayed here for four months before moving back to Washington D.C.. On November 20 of that year, Confederate General Robert Ewell entered Austin and laid siege to Fort Sam Houston; within hours of his entrance into town Nacogdoches had fallen under Confederate control with only sporadic resistance from citizens (the last formal resistance occurred on December 2). On January 10th 1865 Union forces marched into town during the Battle of Iuka Bridge over state line with orders not to surrender without a fight; many residents fled or surrendered immediately upon learning this news while others chose to stay put (the final casualties were 9 Confederate soldiers killed and 34 wounded). Aftermath: Streets have been renamed Forrest Drive & North Lamar Boulevard #1-5 are now National Guard Armory Road

On December 12, 1881, Nacoochee post office closed because Robinsonville had been established by A C Travis as far east as Bowie Bayou and nearby towns were receiving mail from there instead In 1907 H D White built a gristmill on Brushy Creek near present day I-10 west of town after finding one downriver where he could grind corn into flour without having to go through Fort Worth or Dallas It became apparent that milling corn would not provide enough income to support townspeople so they decided to build a school which they completed in 1909
